13th Year Blog Anniversary

13 years and still counting. While most of my friends has stopped blogging, I still kept this little space ongoing as a form of record to track my life journey. Pretty busy this year as I have already embark on 8 business trips to countries such as India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Pray for good health, journey mercy, prayers to be answered and growing ever closer to God in faith.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Synopsis: Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day. [Source: Golden Village]

Before this movie, I have never knew that so many famous rock songs was actually first produced by Queen, such as "We will rock you", "We are the Champions", which are still sang today at many sports arena. Truly, this band is a legend. This movie is a emotional musical depicting the rise and fall of Freddie Mercury. Enjoy the showtime!

A Star Is Born

Synopsis: A Star is Born stars four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (American Sniper, American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) and multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Lady Gaga, in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper helms the drama, marking his directorial debut. In this new take on the tragic love story, he plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. [Source: Golden Village]

Despite the numerous good reviews, I am truly bored halfway through the show, not knowing what direction the movie is going at or what entertainment it is going to bring to the audience. The plot is pretty mundane to the point of non-existence. If I am to summarize in a few words, it is about the rise of a star and the fade away of  another star which ended in the latter taking his life. The saving grace, I guess, was the songs in the movie sang by Lady Gaga. Not a movie recommended to watch.

Vietnam Day 4 - Ha Long Bay

22 Oct - Coming to Hanoi cannot go without visiting Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site also known as "Land of the Descending Dragon". In terms of geology, the place is truly a beauty, going through a series of tectonic shifts to form the current limestone formation. Be prepared to be amazed by the thousands of isles jutting out from the sea in various form of shapes and sizes. We took a 6 hours cruise to explore this unique feature of Vietnam.

Part of the tour package include a short duration of kayaking or ride on a Bamboo Boat rowed by the local people. For us, we took the Bamboo Boat option to chill out. The trip will take us under one of the rock formation before coming out on other side to enjoy the serene scenery.

Along one of our pit stop for swimming, we saw this super big jellyfish floating in the water near our boat. I wonder if this jelly is dangerous....

We also drop by one of the fishing floating village rearing Garupa for sale. The fish are sure hungry as they snapped up every single thing we threw into the water.

Ended the day with a sunset ride back to the port, with the last 2 hour of the journey drenching us with rain. A good trip nonetheless.

Vietnam Day 3 - Exploring Hanoi City

21 Oct - After breakfast at a village noodle shop which served delicious chicken pho (Vietnamese Noodle Soup), we are on our way again for a 4 hours journey back to Hanoi City. Due to the lack of time, the bus eventually drop us at a bus-stop and we have to take a Grab Car to our hotel. Thank God for the wonderful Grab platform invention, or else I cannot imagine how are we supposed to take a transport to Hanoi, with the local drivers not understanding a single word of English.

After checking into our hotel (Antique Legends Hotel) we are off on our food night tour. First stop is the famous Hanoi egg coffee! Served hot or cold with battered egg foam (which is sweet) poured onto concentrated Vietnamese coffee. Certainly an interesting experience!

Hanoi Night Market is another attraction not to be missed. Opened every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a stretch of road is sealed off to vehicles and roadside stalls and local food vendors appears. It runs through the Old Quarter district from 19:00 onward, starting from Hang Dao Street and running north to the edge of Dong Xuan Market.

Still feeling not satisfied, we looked and found a dessert (Fresh Mango with Sticky Rice) that is uniquely Hanoi. In my opinion, I find the Thailand version tastier though. =p

To round up the night, we had the Cha Ca (Grilled Fish) stirred fry with vegetables. The fish is soft, fresh and tender, not too shabby in my opinion.

After a sumptuous meal, the gang split off for some massage session while we spent the time walking by the lake with the temple (Ho Hoan Kiem). Took a picture of this iconic building before we went back to our hotel. The open space in front of the building seems to come alive during the night, with singing and dancing and people just sitting around and chatting their time away. What a relaxing way of life.

Good night Hanoi =)

Vietnam Day 1 & 2 - Attending a Vietnamese Wedding

19 Oct - Arrived in Hanoi in the afternoon and spend 4 hours on a sleeper bus to a mountainous region north of Hanoi to attend my good buddy (KY) wedding. It was an experience travelling in Vietnam, experiencing the local driving culture with the constant honking and bumping of the not so well paved road. Not to mention that there are no water at the public toilets out of Hanoi city! >.< After a 4 hours of stopping and driving, we finally arrived at our destination.

Was presently surprised that a small beautiful pavilion has been setup in front of the bride's parent house with a complete Karaoke system! Behind the tent is a small area where guests can have their meals. Feeling hungry from the long journey, we tuck in to our first local Vietnamese food of the day.

Vietnamese food in general, are quite flavorful and they use a lot of herbs to create the unique smell and taste to make the food tasty. Another thing that I found out is that the chicken they use are very lean in fat, chewy in the meat and very tasty. I suspect all their chickens have undergone vigorous exercise as they are allowed to roam around the field and become our well known "Kampong Chicken".

20 Oct - I have the honor of being one of KY brothers to accompany him in the morning to bring the bridal gifts to the bride house for the tea ceremony. This is the view that I got in the morning while changing into my costume - refreshing scene with good clean air!

Complete with traditional Vietnam costume! =)

Congrats Buddy! Welcome to the Club =)

3Q 2018 Investment Strategy Update

President Trump continues with his signature rant against China and follow-up with his second salvo of imposing 10% tariff on US$200 billion worth of China products starting 24-Sep, hoping that his threats and bullying tactics will force China to come back to the negotiating table and get consensus benefiting USA. This seems to work well with Mexico (as their economy (81% export) is hugely dependent on USA), but I doubt the same will work with China. China followed up immediately with retaliatory tariffs of 5% - 10% on US$60 billion worth of USA products. China imported US$129 billion of USA goods in 2017, while exporting US$500 billion worth back to USA. Trump seems to lack an understanding of basic economics and politics. If his threats fails, it is going to bring more harm than good to USA companies and it will accelerate China shift to get replacement alternatives from other sources instead of USA. The worse that can happen from this trade war is to force China to rapidly build up their technology and capability and compete in areas where USA currently dominates - robotics, artificial intelligence, biotech and more. China has made no efforts in making her ambition known with the unveiling of "Made in China 2025" strategic plans and the Belt and Road Initiative. This in fact has provide China a huge opening in shifting away from low cost production. USA industry seems to be alarm with Trump tactics getting out of hand. They have indicated any increase in cost will be pass on to consumers and nope, they are not bringing jobs back to USA as it does not make economic sense. I shall wait to see how the public views Trump in the mid-term elections - to give his party a vote of confidence to carry on, or to throw a spanner and say: "Hey President, this is not what we sign up for...." I will not be surprise if President Trump will tweet all his shortcoming  and failures to "Evil Democrats" and news media (Except Fox News) who are promoting "Fake News" trying to undermine him. -.-!

Back to finance news, riding on the wave of solid US economic results and strong job creations, DJI ended at 26458, a rise of 2187 points (+9.01%) compared to 2Q. For Singapore, STI ended 3Q at 3257, a decrease of 17 points (-0.33%) compared to 2Q. For Singapore, the USA-China trade war has a negative effect on the region emerging economy, particularly countries such as India and Indonesia who are facing huge debt issues. Investors are worried that should the trade war escalate and results in a decline in demands and consumption, the emerging economy are going to be hit hard and may be unable to pay back their debts. All these seems to have a spill on effect affecting investor appetite in STI. Another point to note is the increasing crude oil cost in this quarter. With the Iran sanction taking effect in Nov, oil price has been steadily on the rise, putting pressure on company operating cost. I have a feeling that the bull that has been driving companies to report record results will no longer last.

Looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, I think the market will be trending sideways, with a negative tilt at least till the USA mid-term election is over. After which, I think investor will adopt a wait and see attitude on what actions will USA do. Will it be..."Un-friend China and impose more tariffs"......"OPEC is trying to harm USA by keeping oil price high"...."double down that global warming is fake news and sanctioning more oil drilling with less stringent environment regulation"..... Oh well....

For this quarter, I am focus on defensive stocks such as high yielding equity and opportunistic buys as below:

Transaction 1: Bought in a batch of Singtel in July.

All Telco counters are in a decline with the upcoming entrance of the 4th telecommunication company (TPG Telecom) in Singapore. Just a few days ago, Keppel and SPH has teamed up for a joint offer to privatize M1. Well.... if this is successful, Temasek will be a major shareholder (direct and indirect) of Singtel, Starhub and M1. What happens to the opening of market? Seems like Singapore Government still have much of a say. Well that is beside the point. I felt that the price of Singtel has dropped to the point that it starts offering good yield again.

Transaction 2: Bought Koufu IPO in July and sold off on the first day.

Just for the sake to earn some coffee money. Haha, but I think I will buy back in a year time once their new building is completed. Koufu operation seems quite steady and profits are sustainable.

Transaction 3 & 4: Bought a batch of Krisenergy in July and September.

Purely oil play. I just thought oil price will increase when USA effectively forced most of the major world economy to stop buying Iranian oil, removing about 1 million barrel oil per day of supply. Krisenergy will also start producing oil in their new Cambodia oilfield in 2019, which maybe will finally turn the company profitable.

That is all for now. See you all in Q4 2018 update and thank you for staying with me. =)

Crazy Rich Asians

Synopsis: The story follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young , to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. [Source: Golden Village]

As a start, the movie title itself already gives the impression that this is going to be a lousy movie, but..... I was proven wrong after watching the movie. Putting aside the simply ridiculous things that the super rich can do, the movie stays to its core in correctly depicting the family dynamics of a typical Asian family. Well, the whole movie did does a fantastic job in promoting Singapore tourism. Adding in bits and pieces of humor, no wonder this keep getting an almost sell out every session for the past 2 weeks.

Great Workout along the Bay

Well, this week is the Pokemon Event Week featuring Eevee! Since Gen 1 and Gen 2 has 5 Eevee evolution versions (Vaporeon, Flareon, Jolteon, Espeon and Umbreon), coupled with the release of shiny Eevee, that is a lot of Eevees to catch if you want them all. According to this website, if you want to ensure you have all the shiny versions, you will need to catch ~400 Eevees! No wonder they have extended this event into 2 days...

To encourage mds to go out to exercise, we picked a walk along the bay for the Sat Pokemon event. The route is fairly easy, but the merciless Sun really vaporized us dry. Singapore is really hot these few days! Well, the scenery is not that bad though.

We did not plan for it but we are treated to a nice aerial plane performance by the RSAF when we reached the vicinity of Marina Barrage! Thank God for the treat! Apparently, this is part of the RSAF50 celebrations to thank Singaporeans for their strong support through the years. You can read more at the MINDEF news release here.

We sure are not used to exercising...got ourselves lots of muscle aches the next day.... >.<

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Synopsis: The best intentions often come back to haunt you. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Chris McQuarrie returning to the helm. [Source: Golden Village]

As expected from Mission Impossible, you literally do things that is impossible to be done. Not bad for Tom Cruise who tried to do all the action scenes by himself, truly putting his life on the line. Great landscape, great actions, great adrenaline, what more can I say? Expectation truly met.

Then Misono's brother Mikuni appears in front of Mahiru who worries about Misono, and reveals the secret that has been hidden in the Alicein Family. [Source: Golden Village]

Truthfully, not too impressed with the 30 mins recap of the entire anime. What is the director thinking? People who come to watch this movie do not have any idea of the background story? Well, a 10 mins fast recap is ok, but 30 mins....is just too much. Content wise, not much progress with the main story. I can consider this is just a side story of one of the Servamp. Well, if you think you can bare watching 30 mins of the story all over again, you can try catching this movie.

Turi Beach Resort

14 Jul - First of all, a big thanks to SW for organizing this weekend staycation trip for NPCCC at Batam, though only 3 of the members are available to join. Nonetheless, we still have fun with the friends and family who joined us on this trip. For this round, it is a weekend away at Turi Beach Resort.

From Singapore Tenah Merah Ferry Terminal, we took a 30mins ferry ride to Nongsapura Ferry Terminal, where Turi Beach Resort has a counter set up after immigration to fetch the guest to their site. Below is the scenery that greeted us when we arrived at the reception - A panoramic view of the sea. During check in, we are all given a refreshing welcome drink.

Panoramic view of the sea @ Reception

For our room, we chose the rain forest canopy theme, so do expect the occasional bugs such as mosquitoes, ants and lizards that may come visit during your stay. Below is the initial view of our room. Everything looks good initially, but upon closer inspection, we found that the curtains are partially spoilt, card reader sensor is not that sensitive....etc. Well, for the price we paid, I guess we cannot complain much... =p

Room 425

Resort pool

Resort Sea swing with the jetty (Currently closed) in the background

Sea sport activities opening hours - All activities need extra charge

Achievement for the night - 3 mosquitoes killed, with one full of blood...

Well, that means I was disturbed by these 3 mosquitoes throughout the night. Food wise, their Indonesian selection at the main cafe was not good. Do not choose the Nasi Kuning, I found the beef too tough, Ikan Bilis too salty and basically, I did not enjoy my meal. For the night, we selected the buffet with live cooking station and surprisingly, the food served and available are not bad... well.. I guess it has to do with who is the one cooking. They also had a lucky draw session with live singing going on. In the end, our group won 3 prizes for the night.

For our room, we are extremely grateful that our hot shower is working very well. We did not faced an instance where they ran out of hot water and we are left with cold water splashing on us. =)

Overall, a decent stay but I do not think I will visit this resort again.

Marvel Studios' Ant-Man And The Wasp

Synopsis: In the aftermath of "Captain America: Civil War", Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to re-balance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he's confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past. [Source: Golden Village]

Ant-Man just simply can't rest. No matter where he goes, trouble just simply find him. Like the usual Marvel movie, expect lots of fighting actions all over San Francisco and I simply love the moment when Ant-Man suffer a temporary gender change? Do stay till the end of credits to find out how this sequel of Ant-Man linked up with the Infinity War that just ended. Simply amazed at how Marvel can turn all super heroes movies into a gigantic money making venture.

Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island

Synopsis: In the story, Doraemon, Nobita, Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo set out on an adventure in the Caribbean Sea. Nobita is the captain of a ship and fights his enemies on board. Shizuka gets kidnapped, and a storm impede their journey. Mini-Dora help Nobita and friends on their journey. When the adventurers finally find the mysterious Treasure Island, they discover it is more than just an ordinary island. [Source: Golden Village]

Initially, the graphics of the crew and the ship looks seemingly similar to One Piece that I thought the author got his inspiration from there. But as the story progress, what was originally a treasure hunting event turns out into a rescue operation that test the bravery and friendship of the kids to the core. I guess the author did tried to add in educational theme such as protecting the Earth and the value of family bonds in between the movie. Not a bad show to catch to end your day. *The parrot is really cute and irritating in my opinion... haha

2Q 2018 Investment Strategy Update

Nothing spectacular for this quarter as the headlines was dominated with Trump trade war spats with China and EU. Trump must be hoping that with America as the World No 2 economy, his trading partners will hesitate going head to head with him for fear of his threat of slapping more tariffs and harming their industry in the end. Well, so far, his "America First" tactics does not seem to work well. China has immediately retaliate with reciprocal measures of the same degree, but this time, taking aim at America soy industry and EU has drawn up their counter measures as well. Allies does not seem to have a meaning in Trump, as he proceed not to exempt Canada from the Aluminum and Steel tariffs. Canada, on their part, retaliates back. The previous tax cuts incentives that Trump announces not so long ago seems to have all evaporated as company and consumers faced rising cost. Companies has now begin to weigh their options to remain profitable and satisfy shareholders demands. Trumps "America First" policy now seems more like "America Alone" and backfiring him on all front. Stock market has been jittery this quarter. While America good economic results has risen the stock market in the first half of the quarter, but the concern of an all out trade war has been holding back investors, leading to a retreat in the second half. For this quarter, DJI ended at 24271, a rise of 168 points (+0.69%) compared to 1Q. For Singapore, STI ended 2Q at 3268, a decrease of 159 points (-4.63%) compared to 1Q. For Singapore, the huge drop was likely due to Singtel (8% weight on STI), whose share price has been dropping consistently in this 2Q probably for fear of how much their local business will erode when the 4th Telecom Company enters Singapore in the second half this year.

Looking ahead, I believe the market will still be dominated by trade news and how the event will run out. The first volley will go live on 1st July. The results from this event will likely affect the USA mid-election in November, where democrats will hope to turn the balance and not let republican have control of both houses.

For this quarter, I am quite on the sideline as I feel the downturn in the market is coming. Only 1 transaction is done as below:

Transaction 1: Bought in a batch of IREIT Global in June.

EU economy has been improving and that has driven up the demand for office space and rental. I believe that will be a positive for IREIT Global, given that they will finish the 4th and final payment back to the bank to lower their debt in this quarter. This is also part of my plan to increase the reit exposure in my portfolio. Recent share price has came down a little and I believe now is a good entry point.

That is all for now. See you all in Q3 2018 update and thank you for staying with me. =)

Detective Conan: Zero The Enforcer

Synopsis: There is a sudden explosion at Tokyo Summit’s giant Edge of Ocean facility. The shadow of Tōru Amuro, who works for the National Police Agency Security Bureau as Zero, appears at the site. In addition, the “triple-face” character known as Rei Furuya is believed to be a detective, Kogorō Mōri’s apprentice, and also known to be Bourbon as a Black Organization member. Kogorō is arrested as a suspect in the case of the explosion. Conan conducts an investigation to prove Kogorō’s innocence, but Amuro gets in his way. [Source: Golden Village]

This is by far the most plot twisting Detective Conan movie I have ever seen. Running against time, unsure if a friend can be now considered an enemy, a timely help which arrived that seems to be a trap later, Conan has to work through the massive information to make sense of the case that is quickly unfolding putting Tokyo in the path of a falling satellite. The culprit which was revealed in the end is a shocker. Catch the movie if you want to make sense of what I have just said. =)

Laplace's Witch

Synopsis: When a series of inexplicable deaths by hydrogen sulphide poisoning occurs, a university geochemistry professor Shusuke Aoe (Sho Sakurai) is engaged to consult on the cases. During his course of investigation, he meets a strange girl Madoka Uhara (Suzu Hirose) with extraordinary abilities, who is searching for a missing friend. Calling herself "Laplace's Witch", she will bring new clues to the table that will change Aoe's beliefs forever... [Source: Golden Village]

On the surface, by the movie title alone, it may look like a fantasy movie, but truthfully, it is more scientific than what you think. What can happen if you are able to calculate the end result just by knowing the irreversible conditions and motions that are already set in place, to the point that you seem to be able to foretell the future? The answer is the sky is your limits. Journey with the plot as the geochemistry professor tries to solve a murder case by using scientific principles and you may be amazed by the results. Sometimes.... that 0.01% possibility can happen. Not a bad movie to catch.

Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple

Synopsis: It has been 6 years since an 88-day dispute that brought with it a storm of blood. There have been cases across the world of a mysterious mist appearing and abilityusers using their own powers to take their own lives. So far, the number of victims have surpassed 500. The government has called this the ‘Ability-User Serial Suicide Incident’. The Armed Detective Agency receives a request to capture a mysterious man named Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, who is suspected to be involved. However, Osamu Dazai goes missing. Then there is also the demon Fyodor skulking in the shadows. An unprecedented new enemy attacks ability-users one after another. As the city is about to get swallowed up in a nightmare, Atsushi and Kyoka rush to Shibusawa’s fortress. However, Akutagawa appears and tells them a truth that they couldn’t have even imagined. [Source: Golden Village]

First of all, the GV cinema sound system where we watched the show is simply too loud for us to truly enjoy the anime. Other than that, it is refreshing for once to see the port mafia and detective agency tag team to bring down a common enemy. Ranpo Edogawa continue as the funny guy for the actions he made (Stuffing his snacks into a safe). The reason behind his action will be revealed at the end of the show.

Synopsis: Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. With nothing much to expect since this is just a spin-off the main Star War story, this  movies depict the journey of how Han Solo obtains his Millennium Falcon. Expect the usual laser gun battles and airship chase as Han embark on his space travel. If you are expecting for light saber fight off, this movie is not the one. Overall, I will say this movie is nothing spectacular. Catch it if you are a die hard fan.
