The Channel Tunnel (La Manche)

Did you know ......
  • Napoleon is to have discussed a channel tunnel - with a mid channel artificial island "to breath the horses" - in 1802.
  • The tunnel is 31.35 miles long, connecting Folkstone, England and Sangatte, France.
  • 24 miles of the tunnel lies underwater, with an average depth of 150 feets below the seabed.
  • The tunneling machines were so large that they spanned more than two football fields and weighed 1200 tons each.
  • The project employed approximately 15000 people.
  • Estimated in 1959 to cost $100 million, the actual cost of building was $15 billion upon completion in 1994.
  • The Chunnel carries 10 million tons of freight and millions of passengers annually.
  • The travelling time between Paris and London has been reduced to 140 minutes.
  • The Chunnel was 700 times more expensive than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

Yes, yes I know, after spending 3 whole day on this blood vomiting term paper, sleeping every night at 3am, feeling zombie-liked in school. End product: 4 pages long, 1982 words. Great......
