Yunnan Garden Restaurant

Food Galore!! Be warned, lots of yummy food ahead!! I have never known that in such an "ugly" and "ulu" building, otherwise known as the NTU Alumni House near the Rochester Park, there is such a good hidden deal. I always wonder how this chinese restaurant have managed to survive until now. During dinner time, there was like only 2 tables occupied, how on earth did they managed to keep their cashflow healthy? Nevertheless, here is a photo of their entrance. There are quite a lot of attractive promotions going on currently (eg: $8.80 a dish and 50% off for crabs), and most of their dishes are not that bad. If you are looking for some cheap place to dine in with a quiet environment, here is one recommendation. =)
.
Peaking Duck
.
The meat are cooked to just the right tenderness such that it still maintain its "springy-ness" when you are chewing it in your mouth. It is a must to dap the whole roll in the sauces provided to achieve an enriching sensation that will keep you coming back for more. The essence of the whole dish, which is the skin, is nicely smoked to just the right degree!! When you start chewing them, juices hidden in between the skin will start slowly oozing out which I guarantee that you will relish every moment of it.

Mushrooms with Vegetables
.
The mushrooms in this simple average dish are nicely cooked such that they are all tender and soft. The sauces provided goes well with the blend vegetables which is not at all salty. In my opinion, this is an average dish which you can easily get at any other restaurant, and I considered it a bit too expensive at $8.80 a dish.

Oat Fried Prawns
.
The prawns are either a bit overcooked or that they are not that fresh. When I started biting into the flesh of the prawn, I find them a bit too soggy for my liking. Other than that, the overall dish is still considered ok. Their shell are fried to the extent that they are brittle and easily chewed up and they have done a good job in removing the intestines of the prawn (which most of the restaurant don't even bother).

Coffee Pork Rib
.
An interesting dish consisting of pork ribs stir-fry in coffee sauce. Giving credits to their creativeness and unique combination, however, the skills of the cook have let them down. I find that the pork ribs are too overcooked and too hard for my liking. The meat are hard to separate from the bones and I find them too dry. Definitely not worth the money to spend on this dish.
Chilli Crabs
,
On picture, the whole presentation of the dish looks nice, however when you start eating, apart from the crabs, everything else falls below my expectation. The sauces used is a real major disappointment. Not only that they taste like satay sauce (really no kidding), but the sauces are all too watery. These 2 major faults totally kills all enthusiasm that I have for the crab. I recommend that you gives this a miss at all cost.
.
Beef Yee Mee
.
At last, a more decent dish. The beef in this dish are all nicely marinated. Put them together with all the supporting ingredients, each of their individual favours are all nicely mixed around to give off a unique experience and taste. I think it is quite hard for me to fully describe it, you will have to taste it for yourself to know what I meant. A recommended dish by me.
.
And now, the author shall take a rest for 8 days to escape the Singapore heat. Australia, here I come!!!

The end of the road?

Yes!! As I walk out of the presentation room today at 1142am, my study life at NUS has officially ended. 4 years of sweat, pain and what ever you can name it, I am glad that at least I am out! Now, where can I find myself a permanent job?? Or should I relax a while first?? Sianz, one headache just ended and one more just came. I don't want (wish) to be part of the Singapore unemployment data!!

Counting down

HR2002 was finally wrapped up yesterday with the final written paper in the middle of the reading week (such a lousy timing). This is a subject that we all do not know how to start or even study for it, except read the readings and hope for the best. Now, that leaves me with just 2 more important dates, 28th and 30th April, after which, I will be free....for the last and final time.

The Final Journey (Almost) + ESE Outing At Vivo

With the end of Friday's Poster Symposium and submission of final thesis, that wraps up 80% of ESE4502. Looking back at the past 8 months, lots of sweat are spent, late nights in laboratory churning and reconfirming of data and results, worrying if the data are coming out all right with the expectation that i had, all are finally summarized into this 1 A1 poster. Lots of tough questions are asked and I hope that I have managed to wriggle myself out of the situation convincingly. Well, now I present to you, my poster.....
And the students and PHDs under our friendly professor Jeffrey P. Obbard
After a grilling afternoon, leaving our brain juice dry, our graduating ESE cohort went down to the Vivo City for a mini dinner~ I like this picture of the water fountain in front of the Vivo City. It kind of portray a serene landscape, where one can truly really relax and recharge oneself after a hard day.
And of course, one cannot leave such a nice place without a class photo. A pity that the picture is very grainy...
We had our dinner at Thai Express. I can't remember the last time I had eaten Thai food but I decided to test my tolerance by ordering their hot and spicy seafood curry - Kaeng Kari Talay. The serving given was pretty large and seriously, 1 bowl of puny rice is simply not enough. I ended up ordering 2 bowls of rice and that translates to lots of carbohydrates! Oh no, time to go exercise soon or risk getting fat~ =p The curry is indeed as the menu promises - smooth and rich in flavour tinted with the sweetness from the seafood! The price was also reasonably set at $9.80. The only bad point that I can say about the curry is that I find it a little too salty.
.Look at how much they are enjoying their food!!
.
For dessert, we visited Haagen Dass to try on their chocolate fondue. Overall, I find that it is an interesting experience, dipping the food, especially the ice-cream in the hot chocolate, watching it hardened due to the cold in the ice-cream and eating it in one big mouthful!! Haha, but truly speaking, the food is just average. For 16 scoops of mini ice-cream; slices of bananas, green apples and straw berries; chocloate fludge and cookies, set at a price of $50 a set, I find that it is quite expensively charged. Luckily, the whole class decided the chip in and share the cost so... it is just right. =p An enjoyable night and I hoped that we will keep in touch and meet up soon after graduation. =)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Synopsis: "I was born under unusual circumstances." And so begins "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards. A man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man's life can be - a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time. [Source: Yahoo! Singapore Movies]
.
First of all, this movie is definitely not for the people without patience as the pace is quite slow, revealing to us the whole life of the lead character, Benjamin Button from the time of his birth to his death. I appreciate the brilliance of the author of the story, working around the law of nature, but with a twist. A newborn in an elderly body and growing younger as his age increases, as if time is really turning back. Aside from this outrageous innovation, what exactly is the message the author is trying to convey? I personally have no idea, perhaps in my own opinion, the author wishes that he can travel back in time to undo something? Enjoy the movie (if you can stand the pace) of the curious case of Benjamin Button.

Sami's Curry @ Dempsey

25A Dempsey Road Tanglin Village (Dempsey Hill Green)
.
Finally, I have some time (maybe an hour) to do some blogging before I go back to my HR reflective paper.... So no life right? A get together session with my great ESE class before the mid-term break at Sami's Curry to try out some of the hot Indian delicacy. Prior to trying out the Indian food, I had some reservation as I personally do not like the taste of some of the Indian staffs I had tasted before. Blamed it on the differences in culture, but luckily, my class did not order any of the things I do not like. Hah~
.
I particularly love their lime juice and their fish head curry, and I strongly recommend that it is a must try dish if anyone ever goes there. The lime juice was quite concentrated and rich in favour, definitely not the diluted kind that you get in most of the restaurant. For the fish head curry, in my opinion, it was not too spicy, and believe me, once you get started, you will not feel like stopping until you have finished the whole dish. The curry was rich in favour and have an additive after taste that makes you crave for more. Mixed it together with the branyani rice to attain a heavenly taste.

.After the hot curry was some chill out session at RedDot, before we pick ourselves up (rather unwillingly) for home. Luckily, I still have buses back to the far far East.

Slumdog Millionaire

Synopsis: Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?". But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating. Jamal proves his innocence by telling the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to each one of the game show's questions. When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out... [Source: Yahoo! Singapore Movies]
.
A realistic film taking a peek into the daily life and slums of India, showing how children are making a living to make ends meet and their extremely unhealthy slum living conditions. Common vices such as gangs, drugs and their operation are also dipicted. The cast system and their untolerance towards other religions are shown in the movie. In summary, it would say that the movie is realistic, touching and by taking a life journey though the main character, Jamal Malik, will simply blow you away. A must watch and its no wonder it just swept 8 awards in the 81st Academy Awards.

Finally, the wait ended

Since clicking the payout button in October, after a month's wait, the much anticipated envelope finally came in early December. Overly enthusiastic, I didn't notice the cheque was not signed by anybody and alas! the cheque was rejected by the bank when I tried to bank the cheque in. Nuffnang got wind of this and I was promised a replacement cheque.
.
After another month's wait, another envelope arrived, but, something was not right. I discovered that someone has ripped my envelope opened and empty of its content before I did!!

I so wanted to cry foul and call the police to catch that person up, but with no inking who was this inconsiderate person, I had to call Nuffnang up again to ask for another replacement cheque. (I think that the Nuffnang people must have been complaining non-stop why are they so unlucky to deal with my case.) =p So, after another month's wait, another envelope arrived again. Having double check its content and the cheque itself, everything doesn't seem amiss. Hope nothing will come out along the way to trouble me anymore~

Pre - CNY Class Reunion Dinner

Though not many people turn up due to last minute commitment, but, to sit together once again updating one another and remembering the past, it was still a wonderful feeling. How long has it been? A good 10 years? Time really flies since we last meet each other =)
.
Venue: Noble House Restaurant (5 Shenton Way #06-13 UIC Building)
Website: http://www.noblehouse.com.sg/ The restaurant was nicely decorated with an oriental theme. If you are early, fret not, there is a guest room where you can sit down in the comfortable cushion and drowned yourself in the nice ambient.
As our stomach are growling, we quickly placed our orders and the food was served in near record time. We did not get to wait long, perhaps 10-15 minutes and all our orders are served at once! Good service indeed, not to forget that the waiter who served us was pretty polite and nice. All the food on menu was pretty nice, which in my opinion was above average standard.
.
Some recommendations to must try:
  1. 蒸 / 炸曼头 Steamed / Deep-fried Bun
  2. 麻婆豆腐 Sautéed Beancurd in Spicy Sauce
  3. 日式三文鱼刺身 Salmon Sashimi
  4. 招牌麦片虾 Deep-fried Prawns with Crispy Oats
  5. 虾子虾仁煎蛋 Fried Egg with Shrimps
  6. Peking Duck

However, I have one dish in the restaurant that I must advised not to ever try:

  1. 海鲜粒炒饭 Fried Rice with Dried Seafood

Why? This is because I find that the rice was pretty hard, pretty dry and definitely doesn't taste nice at all. After eating one mouth, I decided to give it a skip and forfeit the whole dish altogether.

For dessert, I would recommend their mango pudding. It was rich in mango taste, soft and it was serve cold!! Simply sadup! =)

Last but not least, hope that in this new year, everyone will 捞的风生水起!! Huat arh~!

Singapore Budget 2009

With great anticipation, the budget was finally announced at 330pm today. The Singapore government is really looking hard at shoring up its economy as the policy announced are really drastic and quite out of my expectation. The biggest gain would probably be the companies in Singapore, though Singaporean will also manage to get some sweet deals. Here are some of the highlights:
.
For households:
  1. 1 additional payout for the GST offset package is announced to be paid on 1st March 2009, on top of one that are scheduled to be given out in July 2009.
  2. 1 additional month of Service and Conservancy Charges (S&CC) Rebates
  3. A personal income tax rebate of 20% (capped at $2,000)
  4. A 40% property tax rebate

For more information, you can click here.

For the companies:

  1. Employers will receive a 12% cash grant on the first $2,500 of each month’s wages for each employee on their CPF payroll.
  2. The Government will be expanding recruitment. In total, 18,000 public sector jobs (including Government-supported jobs outside of the Government in areas such as childcare, tertiary education, and restructured hospitals) are expected to be available over the next two years. This includes about:
    7,500 jobs in teaching positions and teaching support staff;
    4,500 health care professionals and hospital administrative staff;
    1,400 jobs for the Home Team;
2,000 jobs for MINDEF (including the SAF); and
2,600 for the rest of the Public Service.

For more information, you can click here.

As for me, all these doesn't really concern me except that I will be receiving hong baos from the government in March and July!!! Hurray!! I hope that with this stimulation, Singapore will walk out of this crisis fast, as I will be graduating soon and jobs are not that easy to find...

Ip Man (eep.mun)

Synopsis: Adapted from the life story of Ip Man - the grand master of the Wing Chun style of kung fu and sifu of legendary kung fu superstar Bruce Lee. This movie will be the first important record of the master's life. Ip's persistent devotion to Wing Chun is a classic example of the love and respect shown to wushu and the freedom and spirit it represents. Ip Man is a concept, a spirit, a way of thinking - and it exemplifies a new peak in Hong Kong's wushu movies. [Source: Yahoo! Singapore Movies]
.
It has been such a long time since I stepped into a cinema, perhaps a month ago? Frankly speaking, I went into the cinema without any high expectation for this movie, treating it as any normal kung fu fighting show. However, I was proved totally wrong. The movie not only has a great plot, the main character emotions and thoughts was also well moulded. For the fighting scene, it was greatly entertaining and realistic. A great salute to the grand master of Wing Chun style, for his noble character to stand up to enemies and uphold righteousness without fear!

Ting Yuan Fish Head Hotpot / CAC Outing

@ 22 Liang Seah Street
.With a healthy selection of soup base (chicken broth [this tasted like the Maggie chicken favor instant noodle, which is a no go], Sichuan hot & sour soup [in my opinion, it was not bad, with just the correct sour-ness and spicy-ness] and the Mala soup), this shop is recommended by Fabian to us for dinner. For a price of just $21, you get to select from a menu of over 20++ variety of food to go with your soup. I would be recommending their wontoon, meat ball, pig's liver and fishes (which is very big in quantity). For those prawn lovers, you can eat to your fill by ordering as much plates of prawns as possible but too bad for me, I didn't want to peel prawn that day, so I didn't eat it.
.
For their drinks, it is not included in the packages and are considered additional charges. You can order by a glass which sets you back by around $2/$3, or alternatively you can ordered a jug for $6 which can typically fill around 4 glasses.
.
Services and ambiance wise, I think that there are still rooms for improvement. There are only 3 people attending to the whole shop (which is not enough) and once orders start coming in, it can become quite chaotic. From my seat, I keep feeling tiny droplets of water falling on my skin throughout my dinner time in the shop, which I highly suspected came from the air-conditioning above my head. For the decoration of the shop, I think I do not need to speak further since there isn't any to talk about in the first place. However, overall, I find it quite an enjoyable experience.

ESE Outing @ The Central

Time seems to fly by us so fast. Just a moment ago, we are there in Year 1, blur and wondering where is the place for us to go for lessons in such a big place called NUS. A new found independence, from printing lecture notes and crossing faculties for our pre-allocated and bid modules. Then in a blink of an eye, year 1 ended and we are promoted to Year 2.
.
There is some change of our class roster, people come and go, though the majority of us stayed together. While we are now more accustomed to the "hectic" engineering life, we can still find time blasting our dear professor at his good recommendation of urging us to take LSM1401. As usual, while we sloughed through all our hard-to-understand modules, Year 2 came to an end.
.
Year 3 was a year where we do not really see each other. Most of us are either on internship at some companies serving them as cheap labourers, or enjoying away at overseas exchange. Evening modules was a new-found wonder as we discovered that actually, they are rather slack and generally do not require much time input to study it.
.
Then came Year 4, with a welcoming module entitled "Design Project", asking the impossible out of us. While we bang our heads and squeezed our brain juice dry, by the time it was done, the semester is already over. Before we re-immersed ourselves again into our FYP, let us come out, enjoy, relax, recharge~

..
The Manhattan Fish Market @ The Central
.

Alaskan Pollock and Rice
After working so hard for the last semester, I thought it was time to give myself a little treat, at least eat something that is decent. From its menu, it was described that the fish is in high demand due to its texture and taste. Sounds nice, at least they phrased it so. When my order arrived, I was initially quite shock at the generous serving of fish they give (the fish really really really looks gigantic). Initial contact with the fish was not bad: crispy hard exterior with a really soft and creamy interior, living up to the menu description. Thumbs up for it! Price wise was quite acceptable at only $11.90. The garlic rice that comes with it was not bad (you can ordered chips if you don't want to eat rice): soft and full of garlic favour. The only complaint that I can think of is that they are lacking in the department of smell. The whole meal was quite tasty, but they do not smell nice enough to get my appetite going and wanting for more.

For the setup of the shop, I find that it was just a little too squeezy. I had to literally lift up my bag to my shoulder height to squeeze out of the place. I understand that they are trying to pack as many patron into the shop as possible, but I would appreciate it if more space is given to the customer to walk around.

Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist

Synopsis: Nick (Micheal Cera), frequents the New York's indie rock scene nursing a broken heart and a vague ability to play the bass. Norah (Kat Dennings), is questioning pretty much all of her assumptions about the world. Though they have nothing in common except for their taste in music, their chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band's secret show and ends up becoming the first date in a romance that could change both their lives. [Source: Yahoo! Singapore Movies]
.
Went into the movie anticipating it will be like some musical with lots of nice songs, but, unfortunately I was wrong. The whole story of the movie evolves around the two lead characters quest to look for some legendary band called fluffy, in the process running into some gay pubs, cross dressing pubs, etc. The movie has some draggy moments that it can do without and unfortunately, I couldn't understand the whole storyline at all throughout the entire 90 minutes of the show. It will be advised to give this movie a skip.

3rd Year Anniversary

Time passes so quickly that I don't even notice that Kangaroo's Corner is 3 years old already!! Oh well, blame it on the 4th year hectic schedule. First, there is the design project that attempts to suffocate me, then there is still the FYP to take care of. Hah, can you imagine that I am now in school in my laboratory doing experiment?? My experiment will only end at 8pm.... *faint* Due to the lack of free time, posting has dropped drastically, just like the present stock market (hmm, the price of every stock is so cheap now, so when the market picks up, those people who have a trading account and money must be laughing their way to the bank), lets hope that next year, I will have more freedom and time to .....

BBQ Chicken (West Coast Plaza)

.

First of all, I would like to say that I had a very bad impression of this shop. As a customer, we would like that our orders be correct as specified by us. If the message is not conveyed to the cook, it is ok if an apology is given and promise us that the correct dish will be served promptly. I understand that sometimes, there is communication breakdown as the shop is relatively new and understaffed. But... you know what the person did?? She just show an irritated face and snatched away the food and walked off like that. What kind of service is this!! Argzz, thinking of it makes my blood boil!!

. Hot Hot Drum
.
Now, coming to the food. I ordered the Hot Hot Drum as recommended on their menu. At $12.90, the chicken is quite hard, overcooked, and the sauce served is too salty for my liking. With the same price, I would rather spend my money on 2 2-piece chicken meal at the KFC. To think that KFC can cook their chicken much better than them. At least, KFC's chicken is tender and juicy and not dry and hard!

.

Rate: 1/10 (for their effort in cooking)

Original Chicken

.

Now, coming to the Original Chicken, another highly recommended on their menu. As expected, the chicken is not juicy and tender, and the serving they give is way too small. Taking a comparison with KFC serving size, I would say that it's only about three-quarter. So to sum it all up, avoid the shop at all cost and instead, go KFC and enjoy some real chicken!!

Beacon & Sausage Baked Rice
.

Generous with their serving of sausages and backed rice, definitely worth every cents of your money at just $9.80! The taste of the food is pretty average (what can you expect with just beacon, sausages, rice and cheese?), but with the quantity served at such a attractive price, it justify all cost. The service at this shop is also quite impressive. I remember asking for 2 glasses of water, instead, they provide me with a jug. Would definitely recommend going back to the shop again for more yummy food!

ESE 5401 Water Quality Management

Right at 1530 today, all my stress is liberated from my body. All was quite well, though I mis-estimated one last part worth 20 marks that the lecturer will provide the formula. But he decided to be cunning and provide none in this exam this time, asking us instead to derive it out~ Oh well, I am not a Mathematician, so naturally, I can't do it. For the calculation part, I am quite confident of my answers, and for the theory, only 75% confident. Hmm, looks my expectation for this module is going to drop...
.
Expectation: B+
.
Now, onward to FYP after a little rest....
